One of the main aspects of the game of hockey is puck possession. Coaches at all levels look for those skilled individuals that can control the game by controlling the puck. The average time a player has possession of the puck during a 60 minute NHL game is around a minute. That time decreases with the level of hockey your are playing. So when you do have the puck you want to be able to take advantage of it. When you control the puck you control the outcome of game.
